Cover Letter

Dear Potential Employer,

I'm not very good at math. The first challenge I ever encountered was at age 13. Before that, school was a hobby to me. The moment I enrolled in Algebra, my life changed forever. What followed my first challenge was my first failure. I could not wrap my head around having to work harder than my peers just to keep up. While in summer school, repenting for my sins, I looked back and tried to understand where I went wrong. I had to admit to myself I was far more arrogant than intelligent. Innate ability would no longer be enough.

This was the first time I actually had to learn something the “hard way” and a new found work ethic followed. After that, I knew what it took to keep moving forward. My constant lack of understanding in mathematics is how my mind grew. I also learned how to ask for help from people that constantly made me feel humble. When you feel stupid something amazing is taking place. Live in the moment, absorb it and learn.

I've written about 10 different versions of my cover page. One version tells of a person motivated by numbers, charts and acronyms. Another proclaims to the world I'm someone far different from the person before you today, via personal growth. Not a single version ever mentioned my lack of mechanical skills. Despite my ineptness, in the interview, I'll proclaim I can do anything, but that's a lie. If my car broke down, the confident applicant before you would transform into a desperate fool. If my car breaks I must seek the help of people I regard as brilliant. Yet again, I am humbled.

Of course, I'm not totally inept. I know where I shine. The great thing about any creative endeavor is all that matters is the result. No one really cares how you got to the answer and they never ask to show your work. The math problem has only one solution. When a car must be serviced there's no abstract remedy. There's only one way to fix it, logic is king. There is no option in the solution; you simply must know the answer. Beyond the analytical, the creative can only produce when the journey is taken with an uncertain destination.

We accumulate facts, copy points and promises, and then we make it all seem human. Despite what college professors tell you, achieving this symphony is next to impossible. It takes someone that can assemble something that doesn't exist, without a manual and the result must be a union of art and commerce. It's like mixing science and religion, but it offends no one and must captivate all. Some would think achieving this task is impossible. It’s as if we’re beaten before we even start. I disagree.

I get up early and I stay up late. The volatile and turbulent business climate we must exist in requires dedicated people. If you’d like to include me in your creative endeavor feel free to call anytime. (469-426-5660)

+vibes,
Mat McDonald
